On the Durational Reduction of Repeated Mentions: Recency and Speaker Effects
نویسنده
چکیده
There are conflicting views in the literature as to the role of listener-adaptive processes in language production in general and articulatory reduction in particular. We present two novel pieces of corpus evidence that corroborate the hypothesis that non-lexical variation of durations is related to the speed of retrieval of stored motor code chunks and durational reduction is the result of facilitatory priming. keywords: speech production, corpus study, reduction, duration, priming

A key issue in models of lexical production is whether a model of hearer knowledge influences speakers’ productions. In this study we investigate whether the durational shortening of repeated words is a consequence of mutual knowledge, or if it is a byproduct of speaker internal processes. In a study of spontaneously produced narrations, in Experiment 1 we demonstrated that repeated words are s...

Abstract: The purpose of the present study is two-dimensional. First, provide more evidence of the effects of information order on auditors' beliefs, and secondly, examine whether auditors vary their beliefs in different cognitive styles. These goals were achieved through the use of experienced professional auditors. To determine the effects of information sequence, Hogarth and Einhorn’s belie...

متن کاملAccessibility, Duration, and Modeling the Listener in Spoken Dialogue
Referring expressions are thought to be tailored to the needs of the listener, even when those needs might be very costly to assess, but tests of this claim seldom manipulate listener’s and speaker’s knowledge independently. The Map Task enables us to do so. We examine two ‘tailoring’ changes in repeated mentions of landmark names: falling clarity of word articulation and rising accessibility o...

Referring expressions are thought to be tailored to the needs of the listener, even when those needs might be costly to assess, but tests of this claim seldom manipulate listener’s and speaker’s knowledge independently. The design of the HCRC Map Task enables us to do so. We examine two ‘tailoring’ changes in repeated mentions of landmark names: faster articulation and simplified referring expr...
